The WFA Mentorship Scheme

Applications closed

Women in Food and Agriculture are delighted to announce the creation of our first mentorship scheme.

In last year’s WFA survey which had more than 2,500 respondents from the global food and ag industry, 75% of women said our industry’s lack of mentors was a significant barrier to progression.

The majority of mentors we currently see in our industry traditionally tend to be senior people from the same organisation as the person being mentored. While these programmes can have really positive outcomes, this does not meet the needs of everyone in our sector.

To tackle this, WFA is launching our Mentorship scheme. We are looking for women who want a mentor and people of all genders to act as mentors to help support the next generation of leaders in our industry.

How will it work

As we began to set up the mentorship scheme, we planned on pairing up 20 mentor and mentee. But thanks to the overwhelming participation of our community, we managed to extend the scheme to 60 pairs!

We’ve provided the pairings with guidance on how we recommend this relationship should operate and host quarterly online discussion sessions and roundtables with all of the mentors or all of the mentees to ensure they are supported.

What does it mean to be a mentee?

As a mentee, you’ll be paired with a mentor, who will provide you with advice and support to develop your career. Your mentor will be like your professional guide from a similar industry!

How to apply:

Unfortunately, applications are now closed. You can reach out to be put on a priority list for 2022. We will get back in touch with all applicants very shortly.

  • Gain the support you didn’t know you needed
  • Get advice on career progression and how to promote yourself
  • Open your mind to new ideas and possibilities and identify opportunities for yourself
  • Build connections in our industry

– A good listener

An honest and open person who is willing to talk about where they need help and support

People who would benefit from help and support from a senior person in out industry

Someone who can dedicate the time to take on this role

We will be reserving the mentee slots for women in the food and ag industry

Applications to become a mentor closed on 22nd January 2021. Applications to become a mentee are open until 5th February 2021.

We will form pairs and get back in touch beginning of March with the details of your mentor or mentee! Please bear in mind we have limited capacity and we might not be able to match everyone this year.

From here we will make introductions and the mentoring can begin.

We will provide the pairings with guidance on how we recommend this relationship should operate and we will host quarterly online discussion sessions or roundtables with all of the mentors or all of the mentees to ensure they are supported.

We hope the pairing will also get to meet at our 2021 WFA event when we can go back to face to face events.

There is a degree of flexibility here, but we suggest a monthly 30 minute – 1hour meeting. We will also have quarterly meetings to support our mentors and mentees that will be around an hour. This means you are looking at an average of an hour every month. This breaks down to 15 minutes a week so we think it is really achievable for even very busy, senior people to join the programme

However this is one of those things where you get out what you put in so if you can make more time if needed then this may be of benefit to both parties.

Firstly mentors do not have to be super senior CEOs. We are looking for people at all levels of to take this on but we would prefer someone who has had some management experience as they will already have the basic experience we are looking for:

A good listener

An honest and open person who is willing to share their expertise

Someone who has more than a years experience in the food and ag sector

Someone who can dedicate the time to take on this role

We have no preference on gender
